The Two Boards

The last cahier binds the strangest material in the volume: the site itself. Stages of Imagination put the company online twice. The first version opened on a Flash curtain and asked for a fast connection and a screen wider than most laptops then owned. The second arrived around 2021 on a website builder, with a clean page per play and an audio-adventures section where the song clips used to live. Reading a domain's whole life like this is the same work a gallery of one old homepage does for a personal site: the captures are the evidence, the page order is the argument, and the gaps are part of the text.

What the sheet keeps

The first site is the one the archive kept best: the curtain file, the static pages with the company's initials in their names, the flat directory of images where a dragon head sat beside an email icon. It was a working site, built by hand, updated with new.gif markers when something changed.

The second site is cleaner and thinner in the record: page per play, gallery lightboxes, staff, contact, and a shelf of PDF documents uploaded to the builder's file store. The company's voice is the same; the tools underneath are twenty years newer.

The third state

The record's last captures show the domain in a third condition: pages in an unrelated language, answering 403 to the crawler, parked content where a theatre used to be. That is the familiar end of a small organisation's domain, and it is why this volume exists. The two real sites are bound here; the third state is noted and retired from the record.

What the builder changed

The rebuilt site traded the first version's odd corners for a clean page per play, and the record shows what that trade cost. The Flash curtain and the flat file folder were untidy, but they held everything the company had ever made; the builder's tidy structure held only what fit its template.

The lyric documents, the prop clip and the staff headshots all belonged to the first site's cabinet. The second site kept the play pages and little else, which is why this volume binds the record rather than either site alone: neither version by itself held the whole shelf.

The builder-era file store deserves a closing note. Thirteen PDF documents sit in the record under the rebuilt site's upload directory, programme sheets, study guides or press kits, their contents now opaque behind generated filenames. They are the one shelf the volume could not open, and they are listed as kept-but-unread rather than summarised, because a bound record should show its sealed envelopes honestly.

Between the two boards sits the gap the archive cannot fill: the years when the domain may have lapsed, been transferred, or simply gone quiet between the last old capture and the first new one. The volume notes the interval the way a binder notes a missing signature, by its absence, and moves to what is present.

How the volume files it

This sheet is Cahier IV, the note of the binder. It holds the record's two hundred and fifty-three addresses in summary: one hundred and seventy-two mapped to the sheets that now answer them, eighty-two retired where they stood. What the captures kept is here; what they dropped is marked as missing, not rewritten.
